What is Yu-Gi-Oh!?
For those of you who don't already know, Yu-Gi-Oh! is a cartoon made by the Japanese, and it airs in America in English. In the cartoon, the characters battle each other in card matches known as duels. Each character has a deck, containing monster cards, spell cards, and trap cards. Now people might think Yu-Gi-Oh! is lame, but there are a lot of people at my college who play it in public. It is kind of like Pokémon, which everyone knows is not lame. But in the Pokémon show, there are actual living creatures, while in Yu-Gi-Oh!, they are just simulations of monsters. There are real cards from the show that people can duel each other with, but they can get pretty expensive. Some cards cost $50+, just for one card. So unless you are drowning in money, it is not worth it to buy Yu-Gi-Oh! cards that you need to win duels. You can buy structure decks and some card packs that don't cost that much, but you will lose every time with those cards, because everyone else wastes money on good cards that work well together. So if you want to play Yu-Gi-Oh! without losing every time, you can either spend hundreds of dollars on real cards, or...play online for free! Building a Deck
First, you will have to make a profile. Don't worry, it's completely free. After you make a profile, click on deck constructor. You will be able to use any cards you want, as long as they are not banned, and you don't use too many of the same card. Normally you can use 3 of each card in one deck, but you can only use 2 of some cards and 1 of some cards. It will tell you on the upper left part of the card if you can't use 3 of them. Now, which cards to pick? There are over 5000 different cards, and your deck can only have 40-60. It is best to have 40 cards, so you will get the good cards that you need easier. There are so many different decks out there that I can't just make a list for you to choose from. You might want to look up some good decks online. You can also make your own, but it is pretty hard to make up a deck that will win. The people that play on Dueling Network use the best(and cheapest) combinations of cards, so you will need to learn which cards are good and which are not if you want to win. I won't tell you which specific cards to use, but you should normally have about half of your deck made of monster cards, and the other half made up of spells and traps. The monster cards are normally yellow or orange, but some are blue, purple, white, or black. All spell cards are green, and all trap cards are purple. You don't need to know the names of cards to find them. You can just select monster, spell, or trap in on of the drop down menus, and press search. There are other menus to make your search even more specific.
Duel!
There are a lot of complex rules to the game, so I will let this video explain some of it. Sorry about the bad audio quality of the video. First there is a game of paper rock scissors to decide who chooses who goes first. So if you win paper rock scissors, you get to choose if you go first or second. In the video the opponent goes first, and places some cards face-down. You play spells and traps in the card zones closest to yourself, so on the outside, and you play monsters in the middle, on your side. For the basic complex rules, you can go here: http://www.yugioh-card.com/en/rulebook/. There are some really complicated rules that you will only learn after dueling a lot. The guy explains what he is doing, if you can understand all of that. He summons some strong monsters, and attacks his opponent's life points. There are a few ways to win the game. The normal way is to attack your opponent's life points until they go to 0. You can also win if your opponent's deck runs out, or by certain card effects. If you have never played Yu-Gi-Oh!, it will take some learning, but it can be a pretty fun game.
